Can Dallas cover a big number?

Three weeks into the NFL season and the dogs are already panting. Favorites are covering at a ridiculous 75 percent clip, with the numbers just about the same at home and on the road.

Into the fray step the Cowboys and Redskins, with Dallas a healthy 11- to 12-point favorite in an NFC East game. The number opened at 10 and was quickly driven up to 11 in most books. If you like Dallas you can find a book to lay only 10.5; Washington gets as many as 12 in one spot. But for the most part the line has settled at 11.

If you set aside the fact that this is a division game, is there any evidence that the Skins are anything more than an average team that will have trouble hanging within two touchdowns of Dallas?

Well, no.

Nothing much on the Washington spreadsheet jumps out and grabs you. Nine-point loss to Giants in opener, five-point win over New Orleans and seven-point victory over Arizona. The Redskins are so average they could change their nickname to the Bureaucratic Actuaries, be accurate and make large numbers of Native Americans happy in the process.

One big positive is that QB Jason Campbell has yet to throw a pick, and with Dallas’s stop-the-run-at-all-costs defense Campbell might be able to do some damage. Campbell has quality receivers in Santana Moss, who has a touchdown in each game this season and had a monster 164-yard game against the Saints; and Antwaan Randel El, another quality wideout who can also cause damage throwing the ball.

Running back Clinton Portis may be in for a difficult four quarters. He’s got recurring neck problems that have limited him to less than four yards a carry, and Dallas’ front seven is probably not what he wants to see at this point, even if Cowboy nose tackle Tank Johnson will be playing at less than 100 percent, if at all. Still, last word is that Portis expects to play. Six-time Pro Bowl DE Jason Taylor is out.

If nothing else, the Skins deserve props for the way they pulled themselves off the mat after Sean Taylor was murdered in the middle of last season. Taylor was gunned down at his home eight days after Washington lost at Dallas by five. The Skins rallied late in the season, though, winning their last four, including a 27-6 job over Dallas in the finale.

But isn’t this game really all about the Cowboys? As Barack Obama would say: “This is our moment; this is our time.”

Peter Childs agrees that Boys are back in town.

“The Cowboys have been on national TV all three weeks of the season,” says Childs, an oddsmaker at belmont.com. “They played at Cleveland on Fox, two weeks ago that exciting Monday Night game vs. the Eagles and last week blew out a good Packers team on Sunday night.”

Childs says the high profile that the Cowboys wear translates into action. “The Cowboys are by far the biggest public team in the NFL and I figure the public will back them once again.” Washington, says Childs, is a decent team with a low profile, and that gives the +11 number some value.

Skins backers might want to hold off, because as Childs points out, 95 percent of the action will come down on Sunday, and heavy Dallas money could drive the number up even higher.

Dallas’s transformation has been stunning. Two years ago the Boys had that most toxic combination imaginable – the worst offensive line in the league trying to protect Drew Bledsoe. Now the O line is solid, the D line is dominant, Tony Romo is surrounded by stars on and off the field, and the way the money is rolling in Jerry Jones can easily afford another facelift.

Dallas is on a pace to score 544 points this year. That’s still a field goal a game short of the ridiculous record number the Patriots put up last year, but how many teams are going to beat the Cowboys when they score 32 a game? After Washington the Cowboys have Cincinnati, Arizona and St. Louis. (As an aside, the Giants don’t have a killer schedule in October, either, and that Nov. 2 Dallas/NYG battle looks like the game of the season.)

So are there any icebergs confronting the Cowboys in this one?

Well, for one, Wade Philips would consider it a personal favor if Tony Romo could take better care of the ball. Romo has two interceptions and a fumble inside the red zone, and that kind of stuff can bite you in the behind before too long.

Moss always seems to play well against the Cowboys, who are mindful that the Eagles went over the top against them a few times two weeks ago. But Washington coach Jim Zorn has shown so far that he likes slants and quick outs more than going deep, so Moss may be less of a factor than Dallas fears.

All in all, a decent matchup in a division that looks like the best in the business this season.

This is the time of year when lines get heavy with the contenders jumping
above the pretenders.

Houston +180--The Stros have won 6 out of 7 and
they believe that they can make a difference in this race and so that makes this
series a must show up for Houston. They are hitting well and the Cubs bullpen
has been a weakness of late. Stro's are hitting .324 in the last ten against
right handers.

Oakland @ Boston:

Okay homer disclaimer as I am a BoSox fan and I am still not sure I have
gotten over the Manny deal but here we go.

Boston -139

The most telling news to me is when Peter Gammons said this is a relief for
Franconia. Dealing with Manny had worn on him so much it was physically ailing
him. Tito is a players manager and if it affected him then it affected the team.
The Loose attitude will get them in the win column tonight against Oakland. I
don't make a habit of betting on teams that have lost three straight but so has
Oakland and at least the sox lost to LAA.

Rockies -107

The fish let the deadline go with no changes and seem alright fo rit but this
line is stinky!The rockies are a favorite?!?! this line stinks so of course I am
biting on it. Take the Rockies.

Angels -105

These teams both made changes but the most evident one was Pudge not being
able to handle the Yankee pitching staff just yet. It takes awhile for a catcher
and Ponson needs help. The Angels have not skipped a beat since Tex joined them.
Best team in baseball at this price is worth it.

Cinciny -108

The reds shipped off Griffey and to me this is close to the Manny
situation. The reds team was ready to move him and it made Dunn happy and made
room for youngsters. Bailey is tough on the Hill but Washington has a skin and
bones line up.

Sox Vs Angels: A report came out that Lackey is in some trouble with arm
fatigue but what kind of factor will it be tonight.

"I think most guys go through it," Angels pitching coach Mike
Butcher said. "Even position players … Even coaches. Some times it lasts six or
nine months for us.

"Basically, your velocity is going to be there. It
might be off a tick or two but your command isn't as good. It's a feel thing and
that feel just isn't there. Your arm kind of feels like a wet noodle. … You just
kind of grind it out. Most guys have an idea when they're going to get
it."

John Lackey has an idea — now.

"It usually happens for me
around the 100-inning mark," Lackey said. "It's just my 100 innings happened a
little later than usual."

Since spending the first six weeks of the
season on the disabled list with a triceps strain, Lackey has thrown 921/3
innings in 13 starts. His first nine starts were outstanding — 6-1 with a 1.44
ERA, seven innings or more in all nine, two runs or fewer in eight of the
nine.

In his past four games, Lackey is 2-1 but he has a 7.61 ERA with 36
hits allowed in 232/3 innings. He has pitched seven innings just once and given
up three runs or more in all four starts.

He gave up 15 hits in a
no-decision at Texas and six runs in a victory over the Cleveland Indians, the
most he has allowed in any of his 77 career victories.

Lackey
acknowledged dead arm is "maybe a little bit" of a factor in the recent change
in his numbers. But he chafes at any deeper analysis.

"I don't know,
man," he said. "I don't have any excuses. I just didn't pitch that well. I don't
know what you want me to say. You either get it done or you don't. People
analyze that stuff too much.""""""

I look for a new look by Lackey and looking for this one to go under the
total.

Coming off a crappy night I am looking for a little rebound mojo!!! Going to stay away from the bad teams qas they cost me dearly last night and look some good angles.

The pitchers in this game both have GOD awful numbers and the teams can hit.

Over is 39-18-5 in FLA last 62 on grass.
Over is 40-19-6 in FLA last 65 overall.
I like Atlanta to win again but with the road record they have it's best to stick with the total here.

Tor +104

Coming back with the jays tonight after losing with them last night. Olsen has an ERA over 10 and he should help out the hitless Jays tonight and put a few on the board. The Jays pitching of late has been very well they just need some hits to add to it and that is what Olsen will help them do. Marcum has given up 2 earned or less in his last 4 of 5 starts. The Jays road record has me a bit on edge but I will take them here. Olsen has given up 17 earned in his last three overall and 12 earned in his last two starts against the Jays.

I kow, the A's have hit the under at a regular pace during the losing streak but I look for the Rays to put up a ton of runs tonight so the A's will only have to put up a few. Sonnanstine has an ERA over 4 at home and gave up seven in his last start against the A's. Braden goes for Oakland and last year on the road he was a beanbag giving up 20 runs in his last four road games and five earned in his start against the Rays. Both bullpens do not have solid numbers so this should sail over this total but waiting to game time to wrestle the better juice out of my book.

I like San Diego and the over in that game, but will just stick with these for now.

Late Night With Sneaks

I already told you I like the Rockies but let me break it down a bit more. LAD is 7-20 revenging 2 straight losses and COL is 43-29 at home when the money line is +125 to -125. Even though it was against Pitt the Rockies have won four straight and get the Dodgers off an emtional win against Arizona. LA struggles in Colorado at just 2-7 in the last nine and the pitching matchup is in favor of the Rocks. Wells pitched well in his last outing while Stults is 0-2 in his last three with an ERA over 4. The real edge is at the plate where the Rockies hit lefties very well 23 points higher than righties and the Dodgers are hiting just .216 in the last ten games against righties.

Tribe @ Angels
I don't have the nuggets to do it but the tribe is the play here. The Angels are off a very emtional series against the Sox and in a long season this is where let down games sneak in. The tribe are playing decent ball and hitting better than the Halo's in the last ten. I can't find the spirit to take a team this bad that has given up on the year, (see Oakland) but they can win this tonight. Byrd is well rested and will pitch a decent game tonight. Santana shows up but its a close one.

UNDER 8.5 -105

Red Sox @ Seattle

This is another tough game to take but I am on the M's tonight. The theory is that the Red Sox are not playing well. BOS are 3-11 in the last 14 meetings in Seattle and Lester has done well but with 7 runs of support on average in the last three games. Don't look forward to that kind of support against Washburn. In fact Lester may need a lot to beat Seattle. They hit him pretty well as they have teed up for nine in his last two starts in Seattle. He has given up 11 in his last three starts overall. Washburn has given up more than two runs just once in his last seven starts. Seattle's pen has been better than the Sox in the last three and overall on the year the M's hit lefties better. This is a shootout but I give the nod to the M's!

Tough to take the Jays as a road chalk at any time but like them here. The starting pitching is to their advantage and the bullpen is there. The hitting may be a concern but with Liz starting I am okay here.

I don't trust Ponson at all and the Twins have a good pitcher tonight in Blackburn that has gotten little respect. Twins play well at NYY and are my play tonight. The under is also a play I like and the the umpire is decent in this role.

Florida to me is going to win the east and when they have this kind of line at home I am going to take them.
Milwaukee +101
This should be a good game and both these teams are ready to mix it up but I am sticking with the dog here. This play has plenty fo reasons but I am doing it to fade a good friend of mine who is names bad luck Lenny who loves the Cards.
I want to take Oakland but that's just asking for trouble.

Stinky line of the night take three...Rox favored over the Dodgers after the blue had late inning herocis to beat the Snakes? Don't bite or you'll get bitten.

The Yankees seem to be getting their poise back as the A's are having a fire
sale and giving arms away for young talent. This game is a pass for me because I
like Oakland and think if they have a chance to win it's today but I don't want
to bankon a team to win that has dropped 4 straight. The over is a possibility
to with the wind blowing and the way these teams can hit but overall a pass for
me.

Phi @ Fla

The rubber match of a good series comes to an end today and the Phillies will
have the better pitcher on the hill with Hamels as he faces against Johnson. As
much as I hate backing chalk here I like the fighting Phillies. Hamels has
looked great in his last three starts and has an amazing BB/K ratio of 3/23 in
those starts and an ERA of just 1.99. He is 4-1 on the road this year and the
fish have some big troubles against lefties. They hit just .225 against
southpaws and will be in trouble today. Phi is 32-21 vs. division Hate this kind
of chalk but have to do it. I like the under too with the high temps, two decent
pitchers and the wind blowing in.

Mets @ Cincy

The Mets have stumbled coming out of the break after zooming into it on a big
winning streak. This is a pass for me too, Pelfrey has pitched well enough to
warrant a play here but Volquez has looked very sharp as well.

Washington @ Braves

pitching putting up 14 runs in the last two games and are playing hard in this

The dogs don't stop there as I am taking the home town O's to get the win and
take the series against Detroit. The prooblem is I am going against the Tigers
and they have been one of the better teams against lefties this year, but I have
more going for the O's. They are hitting great and are at home. This is more a
fade against the Tiger bullpen as well.

This week in sports was a slow one with the All Star break, but thought I
would discuss some of the events and speak my mind!

Enough Already!

The Favre drama has gone on long enough and to me there is only one person to
blame and that is #4 himself. The management of the Packers gave him every
chamce to come back and it wa sproven in a timeline released by ESPN this week.
The Packers management did the right thing by offering him a spot in camp as a
back up. That's risky enough and would put Rodgers in a bad spot but they at
least gave him that shot. They would be foolish to release him to just to see
him throw on a purple jersey and take a shot at the title shots of the Packers.
A trade could work but it seems like no one wants him. The only guy that should
be happy about this mess is Roger Clemens because news about him was released
this week but it was pushed to the back page because of Favre.

Tigerless Golf is alright

The british open is underway and guess what it;s okay without tiger. The
young guns have risen up to take the challenge of life without Tiger and they
are doing just fine putting up impressive numbers and keeping golf fans
watching. Not to mention the cagy veterans like Greg Norman that have made an
impressive run and this combined has made the British Open fun to watch, yes,
even without tiger!

Playing for Something

It seems like I am the only guy on the planet that likes the idea of playing
for home field advantage in the World Series at the All-star game. It may be
because I am an AL guy and they are dominanting the series, but I love the idea.
The intensity at the All-star game was there and when the AL won you could see
the emotion on the field and in a regualr game they might even have stopped it
and called it a draw.

With baseball resuming tomorrow I thought I would review the first half and talk about some of the better stories to grace the headlines. (These stories will not include the name Roger Clemens, Yay!) I will also look at some teams in the second half that may surprise some folks.

1) A Ray Of Sunshine--
As much as I hate to admit it the Rays have made some serious noise and this is great for baseball. They are young and they are talented and more im portantly they are winning games. They have the talent to stay in this race and will make some noise for the wild card.

2) How the West plain stinks--
The NL West is a disaster. The Rockies are just one year removed from the World Series and the Diamond backs started off as one of the best teams in MLB just to fall before the break and join the other teams that make up the wretched west. The first place team is below .500 !

3) First Half MVP goes to....
Josh Hamilton-Texas Rangers--not only is he a feel good story but the Rangers have some firepower in the middle of the lineup with Hamilton. The Rangers have surprised this year and would not have come close to doing it with Hamilton's numbers. He is batting over .300 and has 95 RBI's. That's good enough for me for first half MVP.

4) This really is the Cubs year
As a Red Sox fan I know what it's like to go through a drought and the Cub fans have to be thrilled at the way their team has played in the first half. With surprising years from Soto and Fukudome the Cubs have the most home wins by any team in baseball....if they could just figure out how to win on the road.

5) Teams to watch for the second half
Milwaukee--is a team on the rise and the trade for CC makes this a easy team to have on your radar.
Toronto--the problem with this team is they play in the over talented AL east but I am not ready to give up on them yet. The pitching is deep and if they stay healthy they will make some noise in the second half.
Detroit--After a dismal start this team has shaped up to make a run for the divison in the second half and are just seven games back. The lineup is ready to go but they need the starting pitching to show up in the second half.
Florida--The Mets and the Phillies are the talk of this didvison but watch for the fish to make a statement that they are still in this thing. They play nearly .500 ball (24-25) on the road and that is a better record than the Cubs, Mets, Brewers and Red Sox.

Mets/Phils--This may be too good to be true but I have to
play it simple and go with the total. OVER 10.5--Pedro has been
a mess from tipping pitches to just looking bad with a lofty ERA over 10 in his
last three. The wind will help as it is blowing out of the park and Eaton's
numbers will help. His ERA and WHIP are both high in his last three and when he
pitches at home. I know he has good numbers against the Mets but let's face it
he is in trouble night. The Mets need this win to have a great series against
the first place club and they get it tonight. Mets +124

Play On
Any team (NY METS)
with a starting
pitcher whose ERA is 6.70 or worse on the season (NL) against opponent with a
starting pitcher whose WHIP is 1.450 to 1.550 on the

Hou/Pitt--Looking like bad weather here and since I have
alot invested in one bad weather game I'll pass on this one.

Minn/Bos--This line is high as the Sox head back to Fenway,
but how can you pass up on the dog here tonight? Dice K is not the same off the
injury posting one decents start and two shaky ones. In the last three Baker has
better numbers and you get a hot team that has won five straight and they are
hitting a robust .351 in the last ten against righties. Baker: MIN 31-29
as an underdog of +100 or higher and Matsuzaka: BOS 4-11 revenging a loss.

Road underdogs with a money line
of +100 or higher (MINNESOTA)
average offensive team (4.7 to 5.2
runs/game) against a very good starter (ERA<=3.50) (AL), with a good bullpen

road and I like the under which seems impossible to take when the Rangers play a
game.

Col/Mil--I am going to pass here but if you have the guts I
would consider the Rockies. They have won 2 of 3 against the Brew crew and are
5-1 in the last 6. The starters edge goes to the Rockies and they have a good
chance to win here against McClung trying to stay in the rotation.

How To Lose

Winning in sports gambling is easy. It’s fun, profitable and you
rarely see a winner who does not have a smile plastered on his face. Losing on
the other hand is a difficult pill to swallow. The loser is out of money and out
of luck and it gets even worse when it is by a last minute shot or field goal
and the loss is the result of a bad break.

Growing up as a sports bettor like many of us I had a mentor and
he always told me that winning is easy, but if you can handle losing than this
can be a very fun and profitable venture. There are several rules of thumbs you
should keep in mind when you have lost a game and when you learn to follow all
of these things then losing is not that difficult after all.

Don’t watch the games: If you don’t watch a game then you
will never realize that a bad call, tough shot or bad reply cost you some money.
This is the hardest rule that there is to follow because everyone enjoys
watching a game they have action on.

Vent then shake it off: After a tough loss take a minute by
yourself and vent. Scream at the top of your lungs, call a friend and tell
him/her about it and then let it go. The sooner you put it behind you the better
and you can move on to the good part; winning.

Look at the big picture: After losing a big game on a bad
call look at your crib sheet for the day. Often people will be so disappointed
with a tough beat they will not take the time to look at the numbers for the
day, week, or month. If overall you are up then that loss does not seem so big
after all.

No What-If Scenario’s: This goes back to rule #3 and is
connected in many ways. How many times have you found your self saying: “yeah I
won $100, but if I won that game it would have been $300!” Stop playing what-if
and remember the big picture.

Think about baseball: A baseball player who hits .300 is
considered great. Same thing for a good handicapper who just needs to be over
.500 to do well and make money. Get used to losing it happens to the best of us.

Avoid losing and study: This is easier said then done, but
it will make you a better capper if you study your losses. Look at the box
scores, the lines, and anything else that you may have noticed before the game
that could have saved you if you had noticed it before hand. In the long run
this will save you some serious money just by investing a little time.

Pull back the reigns: This rule is best used if you are in
a losing streak, not if you have just lost one bad game. If you are in a losing
streak, shade back your bet amounts. The lower you bet the easier it is to
swallow and when you heat up you can raise them again. When in a losing streak
avoid carnival bets as well such as teasers and parlays. This will also help you
avoid chasing.

Take a day off: This is suggested for
winning and losing, a day off always does the body and the mind good and it
gives you a chance to appreciate the better things in
life.

The professionals in this business only suggest to be successful you need
only hit about 54% of your selections. That means you will lose and you will
lose up to 46% of the time and that is if you are good. Handling how you lose is
important and will allow you to prosper and more importantly, profit.

Q: So how does it work?

Top five ranking doesn’t mean what it used to this College Football season. Nevertheless, 2nd ranked South Florida looks to remain one of the nation’s six unbeaten teams Thursday night in a crucial Big East showdown with last year’s conference upstart, the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. USF opened as a slight 2.5 or 3-point road favorite depending on the book, with the total sitting at 52 points. This is a revenge spot for the favored Bulls, who lost to Rutgers in ’06, 22-20, after a two-point conversion was dropped in the end zone. They did cover, however, as four-point dogs. In that meeting last season, the Bulls actually had a chance to win after the failed two-point try, but a recovered onside kick was called back after it was ruled that the ball was touched a ½ yard too soon. Coming into 2007, RU had won 10 of 12 at home before dropping back-to-back contests to Maryland and Cincinnati earlier this month. The Scarlet Knights season looked over a week ago when they trailed one-win Syracuse 14-0 in the first half, but the team scored 38 unanswered points for a relatively easy win and cover as big 17-point road chalk. Ray Rice rushed for 196 yards and three scores for Rutgers, who is just 2-4 straight up the week after playing Syracuse. However, they hope to benefit from what should be a raucous crowd similar to what we saw in the Louisville game last year – another nationally televised Thursday Night battle. South Florida, who has been playing football for only eleven seasons, had never been ranked in the Top 25 prior to this season. After passing its first test on 9/28 at home against West Virginia (21-13, +7), this should prove to be the toughest test to date for this young program. Last week, South Florida took a break from Big East play to crush visiting Central Florida, 64-12. Matt Grothe threw for 212 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 100 and two scores for the Bulls, who moved up three spots in the polls after multiple teams above them lost, and are in the all-important No. 2 spot in the first BCS standings. The Bulls will look for a repeat of their 2005 trip here, a 45-31 win. Rutgers will be a tough foe here though, with a 12-2 ATS record against elite teams outscoring opponents by 10+PPG under Greg Schiano.

This is how the contest will work. The Capper will pick one play per day. It will be in baseball and it can be any type of play, side total, runline, etc. Records will be kept and posted on this blog. At the end of every week that capper will be highlighted at this blog (and my others) for FREE. At the end of 30 days we will crown the best capper!! You can be a professional or an amateur it does not matter it is just a matter of picking winners! The winner will get a free spotlight on the blog devoted to their great skills and will also get a huge prize! I am working with sponsors to see what they will offer! We will get started once we get a good sample of folks to join.

How to join: At the end of every post on my blog there is a comment section. Click on that and reply with your name, or service name and that you are in.

Yesterday I made front page news at Pro Cappers as I finished 7-1 on the day in college hoops and was 2nd overall on the day.

This was huge for me in college hoops as I started off the year on a slide and this brought me over the .500 mark and placed at number 48 breaking the top 50. It is still a long season to go and the key is to get in the positive units.

College Saturday:

A big card for me in college hoops today as I get into repairing my record and look to get over .500.

Today my best play is on Notre Dame +1.5 over Seton Hall.

The Irish have been underrated because of the record but they have all been close games against tough teams.

Sometimes losing is winning

Yesterday in the NBA I managed to just go 1-1 on the day but actually gained a spot in the standing and went up to 18th place overall in the tournament.

That is one of the great things about this tournament even if you take a night off you can actually gain room in the standings.

With the all-star break upon us it is time to focus on college basketball and try to improve my standings which should not be hard. I am 61st place in college hoops and 3 games under .500 I took a break from this to focus on the NBA but with the tournament closely approaching it is time to work on both sports.

There will be no selections for today but make sure to check out the other Sneaks Sheet sites for tons of information that will be posted later today.

At the sneaks sheet I will cover what to do over the all-star break, at Tips, Tools, and Trends I will post some information to use for tonight and into the weekend. Free Fall

Last night was a bad one as the combination of a sub par night by me and good night by several cappers, knocked me down all the way to the 19th spot. The season is a long one so the key is not to rush and chase but just to stay in the race. Overtime Killer: Wednesday Update

After a rough night in the NBA I look to the last big slate in the NBA before the all-star break to make up some ground in the tournament and finish strong in the Pro Cappers Challenge.

Last night I finished 1-3 and dropped to 3rd in the tournament. Still respectable but not where I want to be. Last night’s big loss was the Chicago Bulls who held a 5 point with one minute to go against the Kings and gave up two easy buckets to force over time where they completely collapsed. A tough loss which would have kept me at .500 for the night, but I digress. In sports handicapping it is important to do homework on games that have been played already not just the upcoming games, this way you can avoid pitfalls in the future. I have written a mini article on this that will be featured at Sports Handicapping Tips, Tools, and Trends, which will also feature Trends for tonight’s games.

Perfection!Last night I was perfect at Pro Cappers and the great Saturday night launched me into third place and within striking distance of the #1 spot in the challenge. This is a very long season but the strategy changes when you get this high and the key is to just stick around up here and keep swinging.

Saturday Update

Tough Night last night as I finished below .500 and dropped to #8 in the rankings at Pro Cappers Challenge. This is a long season and the goal is to be in the race when the season is winding down. With that in mind, I am still hitting at 55% in my last 118 selections and have a decent card for tonight.

My best play tonight is on the Golden St Warriors +7 over Cleveland.
